The first Manga comic from the sub-continent releasing too! PDF Print E-mail

While Papa Tenzing had been whimsically riding his bike all over the place (read the post below), his little one was home, sketching a whole lot, as it turns out.

Dechen P Tenzing, a 14 year old from Gangtok, brings to us a slice of contemporary Japanese teen culture in the form of "Wolfs Fang", the first manga comic to come out of this part of the globe!

At the time of her book release, her father says that she might be hogging all the limelight out of his event (with a hidden sense of great pride, one may add).

So while the father-daugter team sit down to sign autographs, the comic fans at Rachna Books (that's us!) will make sure the queue you're standing in to have your copy of their book signed moves faster than any line you've stood in.

But be there on time. Event starts at 3pm on 23rd March at The First Floor.

So the thundering Thunderbird has finally arrived, ending all our anxiety and the restless wait.
PG Tenzing's tales of his whimsical journey across the sub-continent is going to be out for all to read.
On 23rd of March at 3 pm, we launch his travalogue "Dont Ask Any Old Bloke For Directions" .

We are conspiring to get the biker off his saddle for once, seat him on a chair, hand over the pen and have him sign your copy of the book. The guys at Sokpa Productions have volunteered to hide his bike keys for 4 hours at least!

This is a first of its kind even in Sikkim, again made possible only by the support of Friends at Rachna.

Be there!

Small Town Film Club launched PDF Print E-mail
Written by Raman Shresta
Friday, 21 November 2008

On the 15th evening of this month, Small Town Film Club had its first screening amidst a small gathering of film-enthusiasts.

The film to go down in history as the first one to be screened at Small Town Film Club is "Clouds " by Tenzing Dakpa . He is a fourth year student in Delhi College of Art.

Also to attend the event, by sheer coincidence (and a pleasant one at that) was Pat Murphy . She is a director, writer and producer from Ireland and also teaches at a film school in Belfast. Her works include the film "Nora" which took 10 years in the making. It is a movie about James Joyce's wife and the relationship they had. The central characters are played by Susan Lynch and Ewan McGregor. With Pat's presence at the screening, our bookshop's literary connection to films was made!

Unlike many other events put together by Friends at Rachna, the invitation was sent out almost only by word of mouth, and through this website. This perhaps heralds the new direction and seriousness we aspire for with an event, or rather a series of monthly events, that Small Town Film Club is.

We hope that in time we have many more films that film-makers, both aspiring or established, would want to share in this part of the Himalaya.

Thank you for making the first chapter of Small Town Film Club a successful one!

"Aperture Culture" – a display of photographs PDF Print E-mail

Friends at Rachna announces the opening of a display of photographs by local enthusiasts under the banner "Aperture Culture" on The First Floor at Rachna Books starting 16th November 2008.

Six photo enthusiasts - some professionals, all published, have come together to share the photos taken by them to the people of the eastern Himalaya- everyone's invited! The team consists of Suraj Gurung, ST Wangdi, Karma Loday, Birendra Rai, Karchoong Diyali and Raman Shresta.

Because Aperture Culture is an open platform for using photography as a mode of creativity and self-expression, there is no rigidity of themes that this never-ending event follows. This is evident from the nature of all 42 photos that is going to be on display this Sunday onwards.

Photos at Aperture Culture are going to be on display and sale permanently at the first floor of the bookshop. To keep things interesting for the audience, the display will be changed on a regular basis.

The main motive behind this display is to introduce to the people - specially the school-children and the youth - the versatile, innovative and personal mode of expression that photography is. Perhaps this could also inspire them to take up photography as a hobby if not seriously. With this in mind, and in anticipation, the Aperture Culture team invites all budding photo enthusiasts to come and participate in this event with their photos. Plans are on to hold similar displays for such entries on a regular basis in time to come. The entries should not be bigger than 8 inches X 12 inches and should be framed.

It is also worthwhile noting here that two of the photographers in the Aperture Culture team have now gone international! Some works by Karchoong Diyali and Raman Shresta are going to be on display at the 4th edition of Magic Garage in Los Angeles this weekend. Magic Garage has been providing a platform for art, music and any form of creativity for a long time now.

This event has been jointly brought together by Pixel ART, Small Town Film Club and Rachna Books.

Glimpses of some photos of the exhibition can be viewed here .
